Act 153 Overview
Vermont education law is a group of statutes known as Title 16. You can review the statutes HERE. Title 16 covers education delivery across all grade levels and includes the different types of governance and legal structures we have for elementary and secondary education in Vermont, such as School Districts, Supervisory Unions, Supervisory Districts, Union Schools, Joint Contract Schools, Tuitioning, Home Schooling, Independent Schools, Town Academies, etc.
If you have not read a statute before, it can be a bit overwhelming the first few times but persistence will pay off. You will notice that some of the words in Act 153 are underlined, these are new words being added into statute. Some words are crossed out, these are being removed from statute. When the legislature wrote Act 153 they were attempting to address the wide ranging educational systems we have in our state. They crafted a law to offer local communities the means and motivation to voluntarily consolidate as many school districts as possible into larger governing units known as Regional Educational Districts (REDs) The time you take to read Act 153 will be well worth the knowledge you gain as you venture down the path of creative problem solving to preserve your school or school choice. |
