In the spring of 1998, the citizens of Winhall, Vermont voted to close their existing public school. The Mountain School at Winhall (MSW) was created that same year on Town Meeting Day, March 3, 1998 and opened its doors to almost 40 students that fall, making it the 20th "Town Academy" in New England.
